If a heater could deliver a constant 3 kW to the entire water volume, the ideal time would be about 7.8 hours, before heat losses or hot-water use.

A solar-only heating time cannot be calculated from the 500L label. It depends on the heat delivered by the collector array throughout the day, starting water temperature, storage arrangement and water drawn while heating. Heat-pipe technology does not give every 500L system the same output.

This guide explains how to assess cold-start heating, recovery after use and backup operation. All numerical examples below are illustrative calculations, not tested SOLETKS performance or confirmation of a particular 500L product configuration. The 60°C target is a calculation reference; the installation's storage and delivery settings must follow its approved design.

01

First define what “heated” means

Three different questions are often combined in a supplier enquiry:

First define what “heated” means

Question

What should be measured or calculated?

How long to heat a completely cold tank?

Energy required to raise the full effective volume from its starting temperature to the specified target

How soon will hot water be available again?

Recovery of the usable hot zone and the required delivery volume at the outlet

Can the system support another busy period?

Available stored energy plus incoming heat, compared with the next draw and system losses

These answers are not interchangeable. Before tank losses and water use, the remaining deficit is 7.26 kWh. The lower-input case leaves 18.46 kWh.

At a constant 3 kW effective backup input, those deficits correspond to about 2.42 and 6.15 equivalent backup hours. Those figures describe an energy deficit, not a prediction of when the tank will reach temperature: solar and backup operation may overlap, controls may limit either source, and demand can change during the day.

05

Account for hot-water use during recovery

Suppose users draw 100 litres at a delivered temperature of 40°C while mains water is 20°C. This does not mean that exactly 100 litres left the storage tank: a mixing valve may combine hotter tank water with cold water to produce the delivered volume.

For a villa with clustered showers, a recovery calculation should therefore include a draw schedule.
